Riverview District, retail growth and downtown strategy highlighted at planning workshop

Economic and community development topics took up a portion of the Shelbyville work session, with staff reporting progress and next steps on downtown and riverfront efforts.
Collins said the mayor and council approved work on Phase 1 of the Riverview District and staff will ask for a master plan addressing completion of the Riverview District and River Bottom Park. The plan is intended to tie the Riverwalk and river overlook into a coordinated downtown redevelopment. Staff also noted recent private investment and new retail openings that have improved downtown vibrancy and identified Cooper Steel as having taken over arena operations, which staff characterized as a positive local development.
Tourism and events were discussed; staff said Independence Day and holiday programming had been successful and that a volunteer 501(c)(3) may assist in expanded event and park management for key sites. Staff also described an RV-park initiative and other hospitality and retail efforts to draw visitors and support local businesses.
Council members asked for more clarity on committees and partnership roles for tourism and industrial recruitment; staff said they will continue to develop a master plan and sequencing for downtown investments and report back with funding options and a timeline.
