City staff told the strategic planning workshop that projects to improve utilities and flood mitigation are advancing.
Public works and utilities updates noted that bids for flood-pump structures are expected to go out in the fall, with construction and retrofits slated to bring pumps online by the second quarter of next year. Staff said existing older pumps were used recently and remain functional, but a funded replacement and housing project is underway and requires a retrofit of the structures to accept the new pumps.
Utilities staff also reported a multi-million-dollar direct appropriation from the U.S. Congress for sewer expansion serving the airport area, intended to enable growth and support new development. Water capacity was described as secure after a state award in the “$20 million range” for the water plant; sewer processing capacity was described as adequate for current needs.
Officials flagged right-of-way and coordination work with utility partners, and said they will do regular quarterly coordination meetings to align city planning with utility capacity and development timing.
