Committee adopts substitute that removes doctorate requirement for Bureau for Public Health commissioner

The Senate Health Committee adopted a committee substitute to Senate Bill 904 and reported the substitute to the full Senate with a recommendation that it pass.
Counsel told the committee the introduced bill amended code to change duties and job qualifications for the Commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health and to separate duties between the commissioner and the state health officer. Counsel said the committee substitute removes language that required the commissioner to hold a doctorate degree in Public Health Administration.
Counsel stated there is no fiscal note, the Department of Health would be the affected agency and the substitute would be effective in 90 days. After brief clarification questions by the senior senator from the seventeenth, the committee agreed to the committee substitute and reported it to the full Senate; the chair declared the motion adopted by voice vote.
