May Dam rehabilitation requires partial basin drawdown, city staff says

City public works staff updated the Riverfront Redevelopment Authority that the May Dam rehabilitation project is underway and requires lowering water levels in the May Basin and portions of the Western Basin to allow contractor access for repairs and sediment work.
Joe Shumway, Oklahoma City Public Works, briefed trustees that the contractor must expose backside dam surfaces by draining part of the basin and lowering western-basin levels. "This requires us to drain the May Basin and lower portions of the Western Basin to, allow the contractor to expose surfaces at the backside of the dam," Shumway said. The project will include bank stabilization, added anchoring points for debris barriers and sediment removal.
Shumway also reported routine river maintenance: river crews removed about 80 cubic yards of material from the river during the month referenced in the report.
The authority moved and passed the project summary item on the agenda during the March 25 meeting. The project is in an active construction phase that will change water levels temporarily to facilitate the contractor's work; trustees did not provide a detailed schedule or reopening dates during the report and did not identify any required permitting beyond standard construction oversight.
City staff did not provide a full cost estimate or contractor name in the public update.
