Airport advisory board hears runway rehabilitation, hangar bid update and committee plan

Board members said the Palestine City Council approved the board's item and moved $250,000 from the city's fund balance to cover an additional amount needed for the hangar project.
The updates matter because runway rehabilitation and hangar development affect the airport's ability to serve based and transient aircraft and influence prospects for attracting maintenance, flight training and other aviation businesses.
In the meeting the board chair outlined a package of operational and development measures intended to accelerate those outcomes. The chair proposed seven standing subcommittees: airport operations; grants; food service/restaurant outreach (including food-truck approaches); business sponsorship and outreach; aviation development (maintenance, flight training, schoolhouse); marketing and public relations; and dispute resolution to reduce litigation and settle tenant or operational conflicts. The chair suggested board members and city or FBO staff would chair or participate in each group; specific membership and formal approvals will be decided later.
Board members and staff discussed practical next steps: using an FAA runway-closure checklist as a starting point and tailoring it with city legal review to limit liability during planned construction and closures; and inventorying hangar sites and marketing them to potential tenants. The director's report noted the engineers will be on site through the next day to complete current work.
No formal board vote was recorded on the runway design, the runway-checklist draft, or the subcommittee plan at the meeting; the board said it will return with a proposed checklist for formal approval after staff and city-attorney review.
