Main Street board tables Warren's Barbershop projecting-sign permit; minutes from Jan. 28 approved

At the Feb. 25 Main Street Advisory Board meeting the board voted to table action on a sign permit application for Warren's Barbershop at 307 West Oak Street until staff obtains clarification on measurements and whether the applicant will seek a variance.

Mary Anne, Main Street coordinator, told the board the application proposes a projecting sign (two-sided, perpendicular to the façade) and a three-dimensional barber-pole replica that would not be an illuminated, operating pole. She said the application package submitted to staff included a certificate of appropriateness but lacked needed permit details such as the exact projection and sidewalk clearance measurements necessary to confirm compliance with the Main Street projecting-sign specifications (10-foot minimum sidewalk clearance, maximum sign area for a one-story building of 14 square feet, and a sign height up to three feet).

Heather moved that the board ask staff to obtain those clarifications and to determine whether the applicant intends to request a variance for sign height or projection; Jonathan seconded. The motion to table passed on a voice vote; no opposition was recorded. Board members asked staff to request a written variance application if the proposed barber-pole replica or sign dimensions exceed code limits.

Separately, the board approved the minutes from its Jan. 28 meeting. Jonathan moved to approve the minutes and Jean seconded; the board approved by voice vote with no opposition noted.
