Friends of Palestine Public Library outline summer 'Color Our World' program, agree to fund new sign

Friends of the Palestine Public Library reported on programming plans, volunteer activities and a small fund they use to support library projects.
Sarah, a representative of the Friends of the Palestine Public Library, said the group is planning a literary festival featuring a fiction author, a nonfiction author and a poet, and is working to use a discretionary pot of funds to support library activities. "We still have a little pot of money that we're trying to judiciously use, to support the library in its endeavors," Sarah said.
Friends agreed to cover up to $3,000 toward a new library sign that was installed in January. Sarah also outlined the board's summer reading program, themed "Color Our World," scheduled for Mondays at 10:30 a.m. from June 2 through July 13, with registration beginning in May. She said the Friends or library expect to purchase roughly $2,000 of paper supplies for the program and that returning attractions already booked include animal- and reptile-focused shows.
Other programs and activities noted during the Friends' report included a "speed friending" event for people in their 20s and 30s scheduled for the 15th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; a homeschool hangout set for the 17th; a weekly stitch/crochet group meeting Tuesdays with about a dozen regular participants that makes donations such as newborn hats for the hospital; a printmaking class on the 20th where attendees carve stamps; and a Texas history display assembled by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Volunteers Barbara, Jim, Nancy and Sandy were singled out for regular support of programs. Board members thanked Friends volunteers and encouraged community members to check event dates and locations with the library before attending.
The Friends and the library director did not provide estimated final costs for the proposed literary festival or a detailed budget for the summer program beyond the $2,000 paper supply estimate and the $3,000 sign contribution.
