The mayor said the city is building a new Fire Station No. 3 after assuming the East Jefferson Fire District facilities; the new station sits on a roughly 11-acre parcel of a 43-acre acquisition and the building is about 13,000 square feet. He said initial bids returned an estimated price around $8,000,008.1 (rounded in his remarks). Tree clearing and site preparation are underway while the city times work to avoid bat-season restrictions.
Plans include a five-tower training facility to serve the city’s fire personnel and to be offered as a regional training asset; the mayor said the training facility could generate revenue from paid classes. The police department is planning separate training and range upgrades (the mayor noted a $35,000 upgrade to the shooting range) and is seeking a site for its own training facility.
The mayor said the city purchased 13 parcels in 2022 (about $14,000,000) and owns a public-works parcel on Ruffner; the mayor said public-works operations will move off higher-value parcels to the Ruffner site to preserve land value and to centralize operations. The public-works facility rendering was shown and described as a cash-funded project (city hopes to do remaining facilities with cash while the $60,000,000 borrowing covered initial capital projects).
Officials said the fire station design includes drive-through bays and a back access road (Alton Road) and that the site has space for additional recreation or development on remaining acreage.
