Council approves next three Bird Junction sculpture locations; Main Street to issue art calls

The Bastrop City Council approved on Jan. 28 the next three proposed locations for the city’s Bird Junction public‑art project and directed staff to proceed with calls for artists for those locations.
Presentation: Michaela Joyce, Main Street manager and staff liaison to the Cultural Arts Commission, updated council on progress: the first three statues were previously approved, two of those will be poured this week at the Highway 95 locations and are expected to be unveiled within the next two months. The council approved locations 3, 4 and 6 (as shown in the packet); location 3 is on the pedestrian bridge and will feature several smaller bird sculptures clustered from the bridge structure.
Public‑space considerations: Commissioners and council members asked staff to consider vandalism, public safety and the potential for children to climb or swing on the sculptures. Staff said they will review mounting heights and materials, discuss durability with selected artists, and plan for locations that discourage unsafe interaction.
Vote: The council approved the locations unanimously and asked staff to proceed with an art‑call process and to return with selected designs for final placement and fabrication agreements.
Ending: Main Street staff will issue artist calls for the three approved sites and return with design proposals; two statues already approved on Highway 95 are in final fabrication.
