Mayor: Ward School project to start in April; county pursuing brownfield grant and TDOT work

The county mayor told the commission the Ward School redevelopment project is expected to begin in April, pending the county’s receipt of environmental clearances and coordination with contractors.
“We would be planning to start work on the April,” the mayor said, adding that property owners on the Ward School site were notified to remove personal belongings within 30 days. The mayor said the county is still awaiting a phase 2 environmental study of the Ward School property, described in the meeting as the eight acres between Ward School and downtown.
The mayor also said county staff are working on a $20,000 brownfield identification grant to catalog buildings and properties in the city and county that might qualify for a follow-up brownfield grant to rehabilitate properties. On transportation, the mayor said the Tennessee Department of Transportation has authorized work on a bridge and approved adjustments at the McMurray and Broadway intersection, including signal and lane-arrow changes. The mayor said curb repairs discussed with staff would start "fairly quickly." Commissioner Jerry Ford raised constituent complaints about potholes on the state highway in front of the Tri-County building; the mayor noted those are on a state route and described the county’s recurring requests to TDOT for repairs.
The mayor’s remarks did not include a firm contract award or a final environmental determination; the mayor said the county is waiting for the phase 2 study before moving ahead.
