The Michigan House Health Policy Committee voted to adopt its proposed committee rule and to meet Wednesdays at 9 a.m. in Room 519 of the House Office Building, the panel’s chair said.
Chair Kurt Vanderwall announced the results after roll calls showed unanimous support for both measures, with the clerk reporting 16 yays, 0 nays and 0 passes for each motion. Representative Jamie Thompson moved to adopt the committee rule; Representative Mark Tisdell moved to adopt the regular meeting day, time and place.
The committee’s creation followed a letter from Speaker Matt Hall appointing members to the House Health Policy Committee. Chair Vanderwall, who represents the 102nd District, opened the meeting and conducted member introductions; he told the committee he looked forward to “a very busy year” and to working across the aisle. Majority Vice Chair Jamie Thompson identified herself as a nurse and said she was “excited to be appointed” vice chair; Democratic Vice Chair Karen Whitsett noted this was her seventh year on the committee.
Representative Thompson offered the proposed committee rule and the clerk called the roll. The clerk reported the vote as 16 yays, 0 nays, 0 pass and said, “The motion prevails.” Representative Tisdell then moved that the committee meet Wednesdays at 9 a.m. in Room 519; the clerk again reported 16 yays, 0 nays, 0 pass and the motion prevailed.
Members introduced themselves and gave brief summaries of their districts and relevant backgrounds during the opening portion of the meeting. The committee then moved on to hear its first bill.
Before adjourning, Representative Kathy Schmaltz moved to excuse absent members; the motion was adopted by unanimous consent and the chair adjourned the committee.
