Hampton City School Board chair resigns; board elects Dr. Richard Mason as chair

Dr. Woodhouse, chair of the Hampton City School Board, announced at the March 19 meeting that he is resigning from the chair position, saying increasing time constraints and competing priorities prevent him from dedicating the preparation the role requires. "Serving as chair of the Hampton City School Board even for this short period of time has been a profound honor," he said.
The board quickly moved to fill the vacancy. A board member nominated Dr. Richard Mason for chair, the nomination was seconded, and the board voted to appoint Mason. Board members called their votes in roll call and the motion carried; members recorded on the roll call as voting "aye" included Dr. Banks Gray, Ms. (Stephanie) Jackson Lafange, Ms. Cherry, Mr. Kilgore, Dr. Mason, Mr. Samuels and Dr. Woodhouse.
Vice Chair Stephanie Jackson Lafange told the board she would not assume the chair at this time, citing similar concerns about readiness and time: she said she needed more time in the vice chair role before taking on the chair responsibilities. "I recognize the importance of strong and prepared leadership," she said.
The nomination and vote took place during the meeting’s earlier business. Following the vote, board members thanked Dr. Woodhouse for his service and moved on to the rest of the agenda.
The action changes who presides over forthcoming items the school board will consider, including the superintendent’s proposed fiscal 2025–26 budget and the upcoming vote on the proposed school calendars.
