Redevelopment Commission approves up to $25,000 for Truesdell Avenue landscaping maintenance

The La Porte Redevelopment Commission on March 26 approved up to $25,000 for maintenance of landscaping along the newly reconstructed Truesdell Avenue, from Madison to the park entrance.
Commissioners and staff said the initial reconstruction did not include ongoing maintenance for some newly established landscape areas. Nick Minnick, Redevelopment staff, explained the maintenance need covers median strips, the roundabout and approach lanes, and grass strips along the roadway. "The initial estimates I've gotten for the cost of that are somewhere around $25,000 for the year," Minnick said, describing work that would include mowing, litter removal and general upkeep through the growing season.
Staff said the long-term goal remains to shift routine maintenance to a business improvement district or to property owners, and to build the expense into next year’s budgets. For this growing season staff asked for authorization to contract maintenance now and refine the scope later. The item passed on a 5-0 vote after JT McDermott moved and Damon Gassaway seconded.
The approved amount is intended to cover maintenance roughly April through October; staff will obtain firm quotes and adjust the contract as needed. Commissioners did not select a contractor at the meeting and noted the city’s existing Newport Landing maintenance contractor may be the most efficient option.
