Buckley — A Rainier School employee told the City Council the state legislature is considering bills that could close the Rainier School campus and urged community support at a March 25 town hall.
Taj Duncan, who identified herself as a Rainier School worker, said Senate Bill 5393 and House Bill 1472 would propose that Rainier School be shut down and asked residents to contact elected officials and attend a community town hall at 6 p.m. March 25 at the Buckley Fire Station.
“We are asking for community support, obviously, to help us voice and let everyone know how important it is for Rainier School to stay open for our clients,” Duncan said. She said the News Tribune reported the school employs about 5,114 people in Buckley and the surrounding plateau; Duncan provided postcards, signs with QR codes and a sign-up to distribute materials and said the organization was encouraging constituents to use a text prompt to send messages to legislators.
City Administrator Brunel told council members the city had submitted letters of support to local representatives and through an online portal and that the mayor also signed an initial letter on behalf of the council; Brunel said the city would share the drafted letter and contact lists so individuals could send their own messages.
Duncan urged residents to bring signs and to fill out postcards at the event. The council agreed to keep the next meeting’s agenda short to allow members to attend the town hall if they wished.
