Bell County Commissioners Court approved a request from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 3, 2025 to remove a sergeant position from recruit positions effective Feb. 28, 2025, and to convert a corrections officer position to an administrative assistant effective Feb. 3, 2025. County staff presented the net annualized return on salary and benefits from these actions as $89,418.
County staff said the changes are part of an overall realignment under the new sheriff. Staff explained the sheriff’s office previously used merit funds temporarily to fund a sergeant position; returning that sergeant position restores a law‑enforcement slot to the department’s authorized structure while converting a corrections officer to a civilian administrative assistant.
During discussion, staff clarified that the county originally authorized 66 corrections officer positions in the budget; after several reclassifications and vacancies the current budgeted number is 62. Staff said some positions were reclassified or remained vacant and that the net effect of the present actions is a partial return of law‑enforcement positions to the county structure and a fiscal return to the general fund.
The motion to approve was moved by Commissioner Woodson and seconded by Commissioner Williams. After discussion, the court approved the request by voice vote.
Why this matters The action reorganizes staffing in the sheriff’s office and shifts one corrections officer role into a civilian administrative position, with an identified annualized salary/benefit return to the county. Staff and commissioners discussed prior temporary uses of merit funds and the relationship between authorized versus budgeted headcount.
What was discussed - Effective dates: removal of sergeant from recruit positions effective Feb. 28, 2025; conversion of corrections officer to administrative assistant effective Feb. 3, 2025 (dates provided in agenda text). - Fiscal impact: staff stated an annualized return on salary and benefits of $89,418. - Headcount context: staff summarized that 66 corrections officers were authorized in the budget but that the number budgeted and staffed has been lower (staff referenced 62 budgeted or filled positions after reclassifications and vacancies).
Outcome Motion to remove sergeant from recruit positions and convert a corrections officer to an administrative assistant: moved by Commissioner Woodson; seconded by Commissioner Williams; outcome: approved by voice vote.
