Legislative Audit Committee approves multiple audit requests, including marijuana enforcement and CBI forensic review

The committee also approved an audit request of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s forensic services focused on forensic testing turnaround times and processes for sexual assault DNA cases; the CBI director, Chris Schafer, spoke briefly and said the agency welcomed transparency but expressed concern that an audit would not impede lab capacity. That motion passed 8–0.
Committee members approved research into the Department of Local Affairs’ oversight of Colorado metropolitan districts, also by an 8–0 vote.
Other committee business included approving hearing minutes from March 12, 2025; releasing several reports without a hearing; and approving release of the public cybersecurity resiliency report on the Judicial Department. The committee also voted to enter executive session under section 24-6-402 to discuss the confidential cybersecurity findings.
During the marijuana enforcement audit discussion, staff noted the office will consider the timing of the audit in light of a lawsuit filed earlier in the month against the Department of Justice related to the subject; staff said the work would likely start later in the year and the committee would be updated on timing.
