After student complaints, Kent School District schedules work session on secondary bathroom safety

During the preliminary communications portion of the March 26 meeting, several students from Kentwood High School and other schools described concerns including weapons and fighting on campus, unsanitary bathroom conditions, vaping and harassment. Student public commenters named Kentwood specifically, reporting multiple lockdowns this year, repeated bathroom misuse and ongoing anxiety among students about bathroom safety.
Board members acknowledged the issue during the superintendent’s report and directed staff to convene a focused work session on secondary bathroom concerns. Deputy Superintendent Behringer and Superintendent’s office staff said they will invite high‑school principals and safety services staff to the April 23 work session at 5 p.m. to present data and mitigation options. Staff suggested pre‑meeting site visits so board members could see school conditions in person before the April 23 discussion.
Board members emphasized a student‑focused approach: they want input from students, high‑school principals and safety services about what is happening, what solutions have been tried and what additional resources or policy changes might be necessary. The district also has a student advisory group being stood up; staff said middle‑ and high‑school advisory representatives will be involved in the upcoming conversations.
No formal board action was taken beyond scheduling the work session. Staff said they would arrange principal participation, safety services representation and share relevant data with the board prior to the April 23 meeting.
