Parents and board members press for guidance on student screen time; student rep lists spring events and fundraisers

Board members and attendees asked for more guidance for families about children's screen use after a public screening of the film Screenagers, and the board's student representative described several upcoming student events and fundraising activities.

"It was a very interesting video," Board member Christina Hernandez Williams said of the Screenagers screening. She said attendees asked how parents can "prevent their child from accessing... from cell phones, mostly, and other, tablets and such" and that some parents asked whether there could be less screen time at school, including limiting Chromebooks going home for certain grades.

Marjorie (board member) echoed the request for more information, saying, "When you think you know everything about what's bad for kids when it comes to screens, you really don't," and she expressed interest in providing more parent guidance.

Student representative Angelica Deida reported student activities and community fundraising: the Euro Challenge team presented in New York; juniors hosted a pickleball fundraiser called Paddle Up for Parkinson's that "reach[ed] their initial goal of $5,000 and are extending it to $10,000," and National Honor Society students are hosting Face the Fight, an event to raise awareness about veteran suicide. Angelica also noted SAT and PSAT test dates and student art exhibits on display through April 6.

Board members encouraged more programming and resources to help parents manage student screen access; no formal policy changes were proposed during the meeting.
