District presents survey results showing gains in parent, student and staff engagement

Superintendent Dr. Matt Flagg presented the district’s parent, student and employee survey results at the March 24 board meeting, reporting measurable improvements across multiple metrics compared with prior years.

Flagg told the board the district worked with Studer Education and partners — including the University of Virginia and Darden School of Business — on leadership and systems work tied to the strategic plan. He said parent-satisfaction mean scores rose to 4.12 (on a 5-point scale) and that the district’s student-experience scores increased as well, from 3.67 to 3.85 in comparable grades. Employee engagement participation was high, with 88% of employees completing the survey and a slight rise in mean scores from 3.87 to 3.91.

Flagg highlighted specific gains: a larger share of parents reporting they “regularly receive feedback” about their child’s learning (up to two-thirds from roughly half), and higher parent agreement that the district provides a safe environment (up to 80% from 71%). Among students, measures such as “I believe my teachers care about me” rose from 69% to 75%, and students reporting they “feel safe at my school” rose from 55% to 61%.

Board members praised the work and asked the administration to share the results broadly with families. Flagg said the district will distribute the annual newsletter to families by email and mail the summary to homes within one to two weeks; he also said a video and other materials would be released to highlight the findings.
