Board moves into executive session to discuss possible superintendent appointment

The Wethersfield Board of Education voted unanimously to enter an executive session to discuss and possibly appoint a superintendent.

Board Chairperson Bobby Granato moved the motion, which was seconded; the board then voted "Aye," with no recorded opposition or abstentions. The motion, as read aloud at the meeting, was: "So I move that we go into executive session with the discussion and possible appointment of superintendent. Do I hear a second?"

The vote followed remarks from the district's superintendent, who told the board he is "deeply honored and privileged to have been a member of the Wethersfield public schools community since 02/2008" and that he has served as superintendent since 2012. He said the board would undertake the role of selecting the next superintendent and that an executive session was proposed to complete that work.

The board did not record a public roll-call vote naming each member's vote during the motion to enter executive session. No public action on appointment was taken at the open portion of the meeting; the meeting record shows only the motion to move into executive session and the unanimous vote to do so.

The board had previously announced search activity for a principal at Charles Wright and other personnel matters during the meeting, and the superintendent referenced an ongoing principal search and hiring timelines earlier in his communications to the board.

The board's motion to go into executive session concludes the public portion of the meeting on this personnel matter; any appointment, vote or result that occurs in executive session will be reflected in subsequent public minutes or a later public meeting notice if and when the board takes formal action in public.
