Police say spring break enforcement lighter this year; traffic unit issued about 3,000 tickets and made 32 arrests

Sgt. Brandon Diaz of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department reported to the board that spring break this year has been quieter than in previous years, which allowed traffic and motor units to concentrate on nuisance enforcement such as loud exhaust, illegal tint and blocking. "The majority of the complaints we get with the loud exhaust and stuff like that, so they've been out there enforcing that," Diaz said.
Diaz told the board officers have written over 3,000 tickets since March 1 and made 32 arrests in the month; he said about 10 arrests occurred downtown and 22 were beachside. Diaz characterized the arrests as largely related to trespass after warning and disturbances rather than violent crimes and said the overall crowds and incidents were fewer than in prior years.
The department also reported active recruiting outreach during spring break events and said officers used lessons from recent events to adjust patrols and traffic management. The sergeant said the week was winding down and that the department considered the overall effort successful at keeping crowds safe and enforcement issues manageable.
