Union and district partners secure $300,000 NEA grant to extend paraprofessional mentoring pilot

Emily Heil, a Green Bay Education Association (GBEA) member and district employee, told the Board the paraprofessional mentoring pilot—initially started by GBEA and expanded with United Way support—received a $300,000 grant from the National Education Association to continue for three years.
Heil, joined by GBEA president and district music educator Brent Bergstrom, said the pilot began in the 2023–24 school year and expanded districtwide with additional funding. The program’s aim is to recruit and retain skilled paraprofessionals and address shortages that affect students, including some of the district’s most vulnerable populations.
“Healing and mentoring will be paramount in the success of this program,” Heil said, adding that professional development and career-advancement pathways are central goals.
No board action was required at the March 10 work session; speakers thanked the district for past support and said they would provide updates on program implementation and outcomes in coming years.
