Solid waste officials report nearly 18,500 tons recycled; new recycling equipment arriving

Solid-waste staff told the Bedford County Finance Committee that recycling equipment purchased with grant funds has begun arriving and that county recycling centers are busier with warmer weather.
Solid-waste staff reported that the state's Annual Progress Report figures show 18,476 tons of recycled material counted for Bedford County and 26,561 tons recorded as biosolids, largely from Tyson Foods. The department reported recycling revenue of $9,951.38 for the period and gave a tonnage figure of about 902.907 tons for recent receipts.
Staff said they will attend a South Central Development District meeting in April to learn about future grant opportunities for new attendant buildings; several existing attendant buildings are about 30 to 35 years old and in poor condition. The department also expects quarterly tire-recycling revenue to be deposited in April.
New "slider" boxes will be redistributed to five convenience centers to collect newspapers, and the department plans additional containers for furniture and metal at centers to improve diversion. Staff noted that glass recycling volumes are currently low and that any expanded collection for glass and plastics would likely be limited initially to centers with longer operating hours.
No formal committee action was required; the committee received the report and asked questions about program participation and grant opportunities.
