Committee debates draft letter and plans meeting with interim chancellor as funding decision looms

Richland County education standing committee members debated a previously circulated draft letter to the interim chancellor that raises multiple campus concerns and seeks a direct conversation about the campus’s future funding. Some members argued the chancellor had already received responses from campus administration and recommended coordinating a targeted meeting, while others said the letter should be sent and an in‑person discussion scheduled to underline community commitment.

Committee members discussed objectives for inviting the interim chancellor back to campus and suggested preparing five to ten focused talking points and inviting foundation and alumni representatives so the chancellor could see local investments and community impacts. A committee member said they expected a local decision on continued funding by Oct. 31 and wanted clarity on next steps before hiring additional positions; others noted that Michael Compton had already replied to several items raised in the committee’s letter and recommended resolving what could be handled administratively before escalating.

The committee agreed on these interim steps: continue follow-up with Michael Compton to resolve items already addressed in his written response; gather a concise list of local stakeholders (foundation, alumni association, program leads) and five to ten talking points that demonstrate the campus’s community role; and request a meeting — either in person or via Zoom — with the interim chancellor after that preparation is complete. Committee members emphasized that the meeting should be purposeful and limited to specific outstanding issues rather than duplicating information the chancellor has already received.

Committee members also discussed timing: because the campus funding question is on track for decision by the end of October, some members urged accelerating preparations so the committee can present local priorities and potential community support arrangements in time for that decision.

No formal vote was taken on the draft letter; members agreed to continue coordination, revise the draft if necessary and pursue a focused meeting with the chancellor that includes campus stakeholders.
