UW Platteville–Richland administrator outlines application change, recruits schedule and international scholarship status

Michael Compton, reporting as campus administration, told the Richland County education standing committee that an admissions routing change intended to reduce applicant confusion has been implemented and is live on the website. Under the change — aligned with UW System procedures — prospective students must now select a single campus when they submit an application rather than receiving multiple acceptance letters from different campuses.
Compton said the change addresses confusion about financial aid and degree level differences tied to two‑year vs. four‑year tuition and financial aid computations. He said the change was implemented after he reviewed the web application flows and consulted with UW Platteville admissions staff.
Compton also summarized recruitment activity and a short-term schedule of visits conducted by Megan Jensen, the Southwest Wisconsin recruiter for UW Platteville campuses. Jensen’s near‑term outreach dates and activities included: River Valley middle-school group visits (date to be determined); Aquinas High School college fair (Sept. 19); River Valley senior application help sessions (Sept. 20 and Sept. 28); Reedsburg financial-aid night (Sept. 26); Craig Stout help on Oct. 6; Richland Center financial-aid night (Oct. 10); Tomah high-school visit (Oct. 12); and a Richland High School application help day (Oct. 21). Compton said the recruiter brings promotional materials for all three UW Platteville campuses.
Committee members pressed for clarity about scholarships for international students. Compton said some scholarship agreements expired during the COVID period and the campus has been working to refresh arrangements with the Richland County Campus Foundation and others. He told the committee that, historically, international students received “at least a $3,000 scholarship through the foundation” when they submitted the applicable scholarship application; he recommended the committee review October 2021 minutes for earlier details. Compton said the foundation and campus still need to confirm how unrestricted and restricted funds are being applied and how those decisions affect scholarship availability.
On housing, Compton described the current operational arrangement for campus-area housing. He said Dean’s Hall is assigned to student housing and “that holds 57” occupants; the apartment-style buildings are run at market rates by an ownership group and their availability fluctuates. He said an operational agreement is in progress to coordinate use of apartment units during peak demand but emphasized the university does not run apartment-style buildings and that owner occupancy and market leases affect availability. Committee members discussed the possibility of reserving rooms on an annual basis if student demand grows.
Compton asked that anyone encountering application problems direct applicants to campus administration so staff can follow up; he said the campus can produce a recruitment and admissions packet of updated materials and hoped committee members would refer families to the campus contact information on the committee’s letter footer.
Next steps: campus staff will follow up with the foundation on scholarship-account details, campus recruiters will continue scheduled outreach and the committee asked administration to provide updated enrollment counts when tenth-day numbers are available.
