County staff outline government center remodel; clinic to remain on campus

County staff outlined progress on a government center remodel and building reconfiguration, saying the county board has approved borrowing for the project and the building committee is finalizing plans.
The committee heard that the building committee met in January, February and March and that the executive committee decided to keep the county clinic on campus. Staff said the clinic will occupy space on the second floor (referred to as the building’s "second floor" but physically over the first-floor public area), and that the project design includes a main public entrance, a security checkpoint for foot traffic, and reconfigured public and staff circulation to reduce confusion for visitors.
Staff described a proposed layout to centralize public-facing departments (clerk and treasurer), locate IT and GIS in a less public zone, and move natural resources and community development into consolidated locations. The plan preserves the existing boardroom and recently updated restrooms and adds a conference room and staff break area for the county board chair and executive staff. Staff also described car-key access controls, an optional doorbell-type system for clinic visitors who do not have staff key cards, and short-term parking-management steps to direct visitors while wayfinding changes propagate in maps and navigation apps.
Staff noted that the county clerk currently uses the site for voting and the building committee will continue discussions about accommodating voting operations. Parking modifications on the east side of the building are under consideration. The presentation included discussion with the sheriff’s office about security restrictions and what items (for example, food or water) would be allowed in portions of the complex depending on whether areas are designated as part of the Justice Center or the Government Center.
No formal committee action was requested; staff will return with refined plans as they finalize designs and work through parking and security details.
