Public works committee backs no-parking restrictions on County Highway W

The Public Works Committee approved an ordinance to restrict parking along a newly constructed stretch of County Highway W just south of Highway 33 in the Almaden area.

Rob, representing the Traffic Safety Commission, told the committee the commission took public comment at its March meeting, heard from a resident, the Alton Fire Department chief and the owner of an apartment complex at the corner of 33 and W, and unanimously recommended restricting parking on the west and south sides of the roadway while allowing parking on the east side. Rob said the recommendation and photographs are included in the committee packet.

Committee members clarified that the recommendation before the committee was for approval of the Traffic Safety Commission’s recommendation; committee members voted to approve the parking restrictions so the measure can proceed to the full county board for final review and adoption.

Rob explained the no-parking designation refers to the roadway (curb-to-curb) and not to parking behind curbs where apartment tenants currently park. He said limiting parking near the two driveways and around the corner from Highway 33 improves sight lines for vehicles and protects emergency access. After clarifying the packet drawing and confirming the committee vote would be an approval of the commission recommendation, the committee voted; the motion carried with all present voting aye.

If the county board approves the ordinance as drafted, Washington County staff will implement signage and enforcement as described in the packet and will coordinate with local property owners and the fire department.
