Highway commissioner reports road bans, culvert work and DNR hold on County E North project

Sawyer County’s highway commissioner told the Public Works Committee on March 18 that crews have been doing spring patching and brushing, that road bans remain in effect on county highways except County B, and that frost tubes still show significant frost.
“Currently, as of today, we still have about 5 and a half feet of frost in our tubes,” the commissioner said, and noted thaw depths ranging from 12 to 22 inches in some areas. The deeper frost means the department is limiting pavement work until frost exits the ground.
The commissioner reported several project schedules and constraints: plans for culvert replacement at Smith Creek will include a detour and will occur after July; the County B four‑lane project will begin after the Lumberjack Festival (after July 19) and has about 30 working days scheduled; the Blueberry Flats bridge project has brush cleared and bird netting installed but a preconstruction meeting date is not yet set. He also said the County E North project is on hold because the DNR is not yet satisfied with lake‑impact mitigation; supervisors and DOT staff plan to meet to seek DNR sign‑off.
The highway department will submit two “flap” grant applications this month for County Road S and County Road G; a consultant is reviewing those grant applications. The commissioner also reported one job opening in Hayward and one employee on FMLA for a nonwork injury.
