Veterans office reports split survey on memorial type and strong preference for Hayward location

Sawyer County’s Veterans Service Office reported results of a survey sent to roughly 440 valid email recipients; 89 responses were returned (about a 20% response rate). The office said responses were nearly evenly split on memorial style but showed a strong preference for siting any memorial in or near Hayward.
Veterans Service Officer Gary said 39 respondents preferred a simple, low-maintenance, highly visible memorial and 41 preferred a more park-like memorial for personal reflection; six respondents were unsure and three opposed both options. On location, 71 respondents preferred Hayward, 12 preferred a more centralized county location and five were unsure.
Gary told the committee the office would provide further updates if more survey responses arrive but that typical survey returns plateau near the 20% rate achieved. He also noted outreach and local coordination with the La Crosse Vet Center and monthly in-person “coffee and conversation” events.
The committee acknowledged the outreach and thanked the Veterans Service Office for gathering input; no formal decisions about design or funding were made at the meeting.
