Richland County weighs inventory, auction as UW-Platteville clears campus; security and deadlines cited

Richland County administrator Candace told the committee the county has been coordinating with the alumni association and campus foundation as UW‑Platteville clears items from campus buildings and that some campus property may be available for county reuse or public disposition.
Candace said she has been contacted by community organizations and schools seeking desks, tables and computer monitors and that campus partners have already removed chemicals and some materials. She described a preliminary approach under consideration: county staff would identify items the county wants to retain, surplus items could be sold through an auction vendor (which would handle photography and online sales), and unsold lots could be distributed by a lottery to community groups.
Committee members raised security and liability concerns: Candace said there are keys unaccounted for, and the county is weighing options for securing buildings without spending excessive funds to rekey every door. She proposed protecting selected stored items (for example by covering the gym floor) while the county determines building viability.
On timeline, Candace said UW System had set a May 15 deadline for some removals and that the county understands UW‑Platteville’s deadline to clear its items is June 30. She said the county will defer formal proposals from interested entities until the county confirms whether buildings are viable for reuse.
No formal vote was held. The committee asked staff to continue coordinating with campus partners and alumni groups, to inventory items the county may wish to keep, and to report back at the committee’s next meeting. The committee discussed pursuing an online auction vendor to avoid the staff burden of cataloging every item in person.
