Land conservation staff update committee on dam emergency plans, farmer training and tree sale

Richland County conservation staff reported they are finalizing emergency action plans for eight dams, holding farmer nutrient-management trainings, and continuing a county tree sale through March.
Richland County conservation staff updated the Zoning and Land Conservation Committee on routine programs, emergency-preparedness work and outreach.
Staff said they sent self-compliance forms to landowners and are offering two farmer training courses on nutrient management on Feb. 12 and Feb. 21; the trainings are required every four years, staff said. The county's conservation staff also reported they have sent requests for nonmetallic mining reports to area mines as part of an annual review.
Staff reported they are finalizing emergency action plans for eight dams and are awaiting signatures from local officials (named in the packet) so emergency folders can be assembled for use by the county emergency operations center during flood or dam incidents. "We're going to put [the plan] on an emergency folder so that if there is an emergency with the dam or flooding events when the EOC is opened, we can just click on the plan and it's right there," staff said.
The county tree sale is ongoing and will likely continue through March; staff said information and links appear on the county land conservation web page and on social media. Staff also said they are preparing for new pumping contracts and a three-year maintenance agreement for holding tanks and pumping services.
No votes were taken; staff asked committee members to share outreach information and to encourage attendance at trainings.
