Committee backs resolution urging state renewal of Knowles‑Nelson Stewardship Fund

The Environmental Resources Committee recommended that the county board send a resolution to the Wisconsin Legislature and the governor supporting renewal of the Knowles‑Nelson Stewardship Fund.
Jamie Polley, director (Parks and Recreation), outlined a packet item showing communities across Marathon County that have used the stewardship fund for land acquisition, trails and park projects since the program began in 1989. Polley said the governor’s budget proposal included a proposed renewal and that local governments and park associations requested county support for renewal.
Supervisor Seefeldt moved to recommend the resolution; Supervisor Drabek seconded. The committee approved the recommendation by voice vote.
Polley said the county frequently uses stewardship funds for county forest land acquisition and local grants, and that the county’s associations have traditionally supported renewal. The committee will forward the resolution to the county board for final action.
