The Marathon County Infrastructure Committee voted unanimously March 13 to approve a resolution recognizing April 20–25, 2025 as Work Zone Awareness Week and to forward the resolution to the full county board for consideration.
County staff told the committee that Marathon County recorded 161 work zone accidents between 2020 and 2024 that resulted in 46 injuries. Staff said those figures cover both county work and contractors working in county zones; Marathon County reported no employee injuries among those 161 crashes. Staff said the resolution is intended to raise awareness among motorists and to reinforce coordination with the sheriff’s department and contractor crews.
Vice Chair Dickinson made the motion to approve the resolution; Supervisor Seibert seconded. Committee members discussed the persistent problem of inattentive driving in work zones — including bus drivers and other service operators who collect license-plate numbers and report dangerous drivers — and noted a recent serious job-site accident reported in Winnebago County.
The committee approved the resolution unanimously and will forward it to the full county board and then to the sheriff’s department for further coordination.
