Kenosha County board adopts amendment to civil service rules for deputy sheriff eligibility

Kenosha County supervisors voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 16, an amendment to the county municipal code that adjusts eligibility requirements and statutory due-process procedures for applicants to the deputy sheriff position.

The ordinance, described by Supervisor Franco during second reading, revises language in Kenosha County Municipal Code Chapter 4.01 (Civil Service Ordinance) related to eligibility for the deputy sheriff position and procedures for disqualified candidates. Supervisor Franco moved the ordinance; Supervisor Gents seconded the motion. The board recorded the measure as passed unanimously.

The judiciary and law committee and the finance and administration committee each had previously approved the ordinance unanimously, the board was told during the meeting. Supervisor Franco asked the board for support and noted Claire Chapo of county staff was present to answer questions. No supervisors asked questions during the floor discussion.

At the start of the meeting the clerk recorded 20 supervisors present; Supervisors Carol and Robinson were excused and Supervisor Brady was absent. With those members not voting, the board recorded the ordinance as passing unanimously of the members present.

The ordinance updates county civil-service provisions that apply to deputy sheriff hiring and to the process available to candidates who are disqualified. The meeting record did not include the full revised text; the ordinance was described by its committee statements and by Supervisor Franco at second reading.

Ordinance 16 will be added to the Kenosha County municipal code as amended. Additional administrative implementation steps or effective dates were not specified during the board meeting.
