Kingston CAC urges expanded air-quality monitoring, limits on recreational wood burning

The Kingston Conservation Advisory Council on Tuesday recommended expanding neighborhood air-quality monitoring and reducing recreational wood burning after reviewing four years of particle data gathered with a Bard College researcher.
Council member Emily Hauser said the group has been working with Eli Duper of Bard College and that their data show fine-particle (PM2.5) spikes tied to wood burning, wildfires and fireworks. "One of the big sources of air pollution is wood burning," Hauser said, noting library-mounted PurpleAir monitors and indoor sensors that show higher concentrations closer to street level.
The recommendation is one of several in a slideshow Hauser presented. The council suggested increased neighborhood-level monitoring through the local library PurpleAir network and that the city consider funding additional sensors in other neighborhoods. Hauser also urged education to reduce recreational wood fires and stricter attention to Kingston's air-quality ordinances during inversion events.
Hauser pointed to the group's graphs showing short-term and long-term health effects tied to PM2.5 and contrasted U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits with stricter World Health Organization guidance. "Our EPA is less stringent than World Health," she said while reviewing the chart showing both standards.
Council discussion referenced indoor sources (gas stoves and furnaces) and the comparative emissions profiles shown on the slides: uncertified wood stoves producing more fine particles than pellet stoves or oil and gas furnaces. A resident asked whether charcoal or gas barbecues contribute; Hauser responded that charcoal and wood are worse and that propane is "not as bad as wood."
Hauser said the CAC will produce resources on native planting and related environmental topics and will continue running local monitoring. She recommended the committee consider outreach and enforcement options so residents receive inversion alerts and guidance on when not to burn.
The presentation was informational; no formal action or ordinance changes were taken at the meeting. The CAC offered to supply the committee with its annual report and the underlying data for any follow-up work.
