The Hingham School Committee approved the 2025–26 school calendar after staff reformatting to highlight religious and cultural observances and to make expectations clearer for students and families.
District staff said the revised calendar includes asterisks on the front page that connect to a nonexhaustive list of religious and cultural holidays on the back. The calendar explicitly reiterates existing handbook guidance that there is no penalty for students who miss school for religious observance and notes that students will typically be given up to one week to make up assignments and assessments at a mutually agreed time with teachers; staff said the one-week guideline typically includes a weekend to help high-school students catch up.
The calendar document also lists starting and dismissal times for each school level on the front page for family convenience. Staff said the document was developed after consultation with student groups and the HEA and after benchmarking other area districts. The first day of school is shown as Sept. 2, 2025. The committee voted to approve the calendar and staff said the finalized file will be posted to the district website and promoted in principal newsletters and other communications.
Members asked staff to clarify the asterisk footnote language (staff said they would edit it to read "school is in session unless otherwise indicated") and to list election days for future years; staff confirmed a draft 2026–27 calendar is already in progress. The vote to approve the calendar was carried by voice vote at the meeting.
