ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Senate Human Services Committee on Wednesday recommended passage of legislation based on bipartisan task‑force work seeking to reduce the number of people with serious mental illness held in jails while they await competency restoration or state hospital admission.
Sue Aberholden of NAMI Minnesota, who took part in the priority admissions task force, urged the committee to adopt the panel’s recommendations because they reflect multi‑stakeholder compromise and a range of system fixes, not just a single change to beds or admissions rules. "If you think by simply adding more state hospital beds that that's the sole answer, you're wrong," Aberholden told the committee.
