Police K-9 'Storm' retired due to illness; board approves surplus and transfer to handler

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved the police department’s request to surplus K-9 Storm and to authorize a release/waiver enabling Officer Derek Bowles to assume permanent care of the dog after a medical diagnosis.
Police staff told the board Storm has been diagnosed with a continuing, growing mass (pathology and doctor’s letter were included in the meeting packet) and is no longer fit for service. The department said it is customary for a handler to take custody of a retiring or medically retired dog; Tractor Supply has committed to providing dog food at no cost for Storm. The board voted 6-0 to approve the surplus and execute the waiver.
Police staff also told the board they intend to procure a replacement K-9 with an expected cost under $10,000; those funds will come from the department’s drug forfeiture fund and do not require additional board approval. The department said it will plan a public acknowledgement ceremony for Storm once arrangements are complete.
