Lucky Backus, daughter of Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus and an assistant store manager at Vans, described growing up around city government and said she and her partner are considering a move back to Auburn.
On episode 40 of the Auburn Omni Podcast, host Jonathan Glover asked Backus about her upbringing. “My entire life has been spent around my mom in local politics,” Backus said, describing council meetings she attended as a child and trips with her mother to events including the U.S. Conference of Mayors. She said her mother first became a council member when Backus was about 4 and was mayor when Backus was 16.
The conversation covered Backus’s education and interests: she earned a degree in political science from Evergreen State College, played and later coached soccer, and now works in retail. Backus said she enjoys supporting candidates and campaigns behind the scenes rather than holding elected office herself.
Backus said she and her partner have discussed moving back to the Auburn area, naming the Lakeland neighborhood as a preferred location. “We might be moving back soon,” she said.
The interview closed with Backus thanking her mother: “I love my mom so much,” she said.
