Wakefield School Committee unanimously adopts FY26 budget; committee accepts three donations

The Wakefield School Committee voted unanimously March 25 to approve the superintendent's proposed FY26 budget following a budget forum and multiple subcommittee and public briefings.
The budget vote follows a March 22 budget forum attended by town council members, Finance Committee (FinCom) liaisons and the school finance and facilities subcommittee. School business administrator Christine Pafina presented the items on the consent/budget agenda; the committee then moved and seconded formal adoption of the budget as presented.
The committee and administration said labor costs—largely contractually driven—increased most significantly in the proposed FY26 spending plan, while curriculum materials were effectively level-funded. Members noted the district had emphasized multilingual learners and special education as budget drivers and thanked staff and the town for participation in a weekend forum that allowed longer discussion with elected officials.
In the consent portion of the meeting the committee accepted three donations: $4,500 from Friends of WMHS Boys Hockey to fund stipends for four assistant coaches for the 2024–25 season; $1,000 from Friends of WMHS Girls Hockey for one assistant coach stipend; and $2,000 from the Galvin Middle School PTO to offset the cost of a Day of Unity speaker. The first two gifts passed on voice votes with no objections; the Galvin PTO gift passed with one abstention by a committee member who disclosed affiliation with that PTO.
Committee members said they will carry the FY26 budget forward to required town hearings, including upcoming FinCom and town council meetings, and continue outreach explaining the district's fiscal priorities. Administration said any follow-up negotiations or cost changes required after town action would be handled in coordination with town officials.
