Fred L. Williams Elementary highlights test gains, SEL and new wellness center

Fred L. Williams Elementary School administrators presented student enrollment figures, assessment results and new supports to the Hueneme Elementary School District Governing Board, and described plans tied to a California Community School Partnership Program grant.
Principal Maria Granado and administrator Graciela Bautista told the board Williams has 567 students this year and noted demographic data: roughly 60% English learners, about 90% Latino students, roughly 10% Filipino American students and 87% socioeconomically disadvantaged. The presenters said special education services cover roughly 10% of the student population and the school’s staff includes more than 25 teachers plus a four-person special education team.
Granado and Bautista reviewed academic screening and interim data: AIMSweb Plus diagnostic results and local benchmark comparisons showed English language arts on-track rates rising from 33% in fall to 39% by winter. Williams staff said targeted interventions and progress-monitoring within the district’s Panorama Student Success platform are being used to move students out of intensive intervention tiers.
Bautista described teacher-led work using multiple-screening tools (including ESGI for kindergarten) and credited double-digit growth in some early grades, and noted upcoming partnerships with UCLA and UCSD math projects. The school set specific MTSS SMART goals for reading, math and social-emotional learning; for SEL they set a self-efficacy target to rise from 50% to 55%.
Presenters described schoolwide SEL supports — counselor-led lessons, the Second Step curriculum for K–5, and small-group interventions — and listed student programs such as Circle of Friends, Big Buddy/Little Buddy, Student Council and Safety Patrol. Williams staff also described launch of the Den Wellness Center, opened early with modest funds and donations and staffed by an RTI teacher and Healthy Start social worker Kenya Muniz. The center is intended to provide wraparound supports and expand as the community-school model moves into implementation.
Granado and Bautista credited staff collaboration and professional development, and noted the school is using strategies such as Text Talk Time, Fishbowl Discussion and Growth Circles. They closed by describing planned next steps for the community school coordinator positions and expanded parent engagement and enrichment offerings.
No formal board action was required during the presentation.
