The Lyon County School District board unanimously approved a district recommendation from its health insurance committee to change the district’s medical plan vendor and to transition dental and vision to a self-funded arrangement. District staff said the move will broaden options for employees, reduce premiums for family coverage in some scenarios and stabilize rates for dental and vision.
Human-resources and benefits staff described an option set that includes three PPO medical plans and an arrangement to contribute toward employee HSAs. The insurance committee recommended coverage where the district would pay full employee-only premiums and subsidize dependents, with a stated example of covering roughly 35% of spouse and child costs compared with prior designs. Staff said the committee’s evaluation included costs, networks and projected employee impacts.
Staff and union representatives told trustees the recommendations came after extensive broker analysis and committee review. The board approved the transition with effective date July 1, 2025, and authorized the district to pursue a self-funded dental and vision model with the same network administrator to reduce middle-man administrative charges and recapture claims dollars for the district pool.
Trustees and staff said the change is intended to improve retention by making family coverage more affordable and by stabilizing dental and vision rates. The board requested continued reporting on employee enrollment, cost trends and any impacts on staffing retention.
