Board OKs First Fridays closures, June car show permit and Quality Diesel open house closures

Columbia City’s Board of Works and Safety approved multiple street-closing permits March 25, including the regular First Fridays closures for 2025, a June car show closure tied to a Wheels of Whitley County event and a separate closure for a Quality Diesel open house.
Nikki Kiester, organized the First Fridays closures and told the board she also requested an additional closure for a June car show; organizers were given approval to use parking along Market Street and a half-block of South Chauncey for the car show, and they said they received permission to park some vehicles on the courthouse lawn subject to weather concerns. "We are gonna have our Wheels of Whitley County car show again this year," Kiester said.
Board members and staff flagged a timing conflict: the county courthouse releases at 4:30 p.m., while many First-Friday closures are set earlier. The board advised event organizers to ensure cars used for the car show do not displace active courthouse users and asked organizers to contact the resident at 208 South Chauncey to confirm access. Staff recommended that the car-show parking might be delayed until 5 p.m. so courthouse traffic clears before exhibitors arrive. The June car show closure was approved for June 6 with the closure window recorded in the permit as 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., although organizers noted cars would likely arrive closer to 5 p.m.
A separate street-closure request for Quality Diesel’s open house at 405 E. Chicago Street was also approved. Staff asked for a clearer event map showing cone and barricade placement and noted the organizer should notify affected residents; the board said the company has handled those notifications in prior years.
All three permits were approved on motions from the dais, seconded and recorded as unanimous of those present. The board directed organizers to coordinate details with City staff and the police department for vendor access and emergency lanes.
