Munters to add 270 jobs, $29.95 million expansion at Greenfield; county OKs $1M state incentive

Munters Corporation plans to build a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Greenfield Industrial Park in Botetourt County, a project county officials said will add 270 jobs and nearly $29.95 million in capital investment.

The announcement on the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors’ meeting came with a performance agreement tied to a $1,000,000 Commonwealth Opportunity Fund incentive administered by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The board voted to approve the performance agreement, pending final attorney review and acceptance by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Munters, a Sweden-based climate-control manufacturer that already operates a 365,000-square-foot facility in Greenfield and employs more than 350 people in Botetourt County, will build the additional 200,000-square-foot plant on Greenfield Lot 1B with developer partner Graham & Company. The company’s expansion was described during the meeting as a $29,949,000 capital investment that the county and state competed to secure against projects in Texas and Massachusetts.

“Munters’ choice to expand in Botetourt, right next to its current facility, highlights Virginia’s strategic advantages,” said a prerecorded video message from Governor Glenn Youngkin that was played for the board. Delegate Austin also spoke at the meeting and introduced state and regional economic development partners who worked on the project.

County economic development staff said the performance agreement has been reviewed by county counsel and that no direct county funds are part of the incentive package. Munters’ development partner, Graham & Company, is purchasing Lot 1B from the Botetourt County Economic Development Authority as part of the project.

John Hulls, executive director of the Roanoke Regional Partnership, and Jake Phillips of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership were recognized at the meeting as partners that helped secure the project for the county. County leaders noted that the Munters announcement follows several manufacturing investments in Botetourt since 2021 and cited regional job and wage growth figures presented at the meeting.

The supervisors voted to approve the performance agreement as presented; the motion passed with the board’s affirmative vote.

County staff and Munters representatives accepted a ceremonial flag and offered brief remarks after the vote. Munters’ on-site representatives identified in the meeting included Brian Craft, vice president, commercial division; Chris Higgins, plant manager; Dean Owen, project manager; and Barry Veil, director of facilities.

The county indicated it will provide further project details — including final timelines, any required permits, and workforce development coordination — as they become available.
