Several community members used the meeting’s public-comment period to press the board on travel transparency, student welfare and teacher retention.
Melody Herrera, a resident, asked the board to publish estimated costs for trustee travel to the TASB Summer Leadership Institute and to explain why trustees would attend Fort Worth when a similar conference is being held locally in San Antonio. Herrera argued the district should disclose travel expenses and consider policy changes to increase transparency for both board and superintendent travel.
Parent Jessica Martinez Rodriguez described a series of unresolved bullying incidents involving her 13-year-old son and said she was dissatisfied with the district’s responses and follow-up. She described emotional and academic impacts she attributes to the bullying and asked the board for stronger accountability and transparency in handling complaints.
Leticia Barbosa, a third-grade teacher at Roosevelt Dual Language Academy and president of the Edgewood Classroom Teachers Association, congratulated the district’s TIA recipients and cautioned trustees about high staff turnover. Barbosa cited a district turnover rate of 27.6% last year compared with a 19% statewide average and asked the board to prioritize working conditions, transfer policy changes and retention measures beyond one-time bonuses.
Other speakers asked the district to reopen closed school gyms for summer programming and to collaborate with local nonprofits to expand summer options. The board did not take immediate action on policy changes during the meeting but later approved trustee travel (see votes article) and will continue to discuss summer-programming options, superintendent Dr. Hernandez said.
