During public comment at the March 24 Martinsville Common Council meeting, resident Richard Durnall urged council members to consider the historic status of Martinsville City Hall and to weigh preservation options before making decisions about the building.
Durnall said a representative from an architectural firm had noted the building is a contributing structure in the Downtown Commercial Historic District, and he added that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Indiana Historic Sites and Structures inventory has assigned Martinsville City Hall an "Outstanding" rating — the inventory’s highest rating — indicating the property "has enough historical or architectural significance that it is already listed or should be considered for individual listing." He asked the council to give "due consideration" to preservation options and noted he favored an option presented to the council (referred to as "option 2") that would preserve part of the building and allow an addition to meet future needs.
He also clarified his understanding regarding the Morgan County Courthouse renovation and said county administrative offices would be moved into the renovated courthouse, creating public foot traffic there once renovation is complete.
The council thanked Durnall; no formal council action on City Hall was taken during the March 24 meeting.
