Dr. Sarah De Vlantis presented an overview of programs at El Segundo Middle School on March 25 that are intended to foster student belonging, which she described as "the foundation of student success."
De Vlantis outlined a mix of classroom expectations, recognition programs and targeted supports designed to make students feel valued. Key initiatives she described include the Bark Buck positive-behavior recognition system, weekly "top dog" awards sent home, monthly IB learner profile ceremonies, and the Bulldog Den wellness center for students who need a calm space to recharge.
The school also runs Webb, a sixth-grade orientation and peer-mentoring program in which seventh- and eighth-grade leaders are trained to mentor incoming sixth graders. De Vlantis said Webb leaders facilitate activities, provide tours and check in with mentees throughout the year.
De Vlantis said the climate and culture committee — composed of staff, students and families — plans community events such as Red Ribbon Week, a wellness fair and career day. She thanked community supporters by name: "A shout out and thank you to Ed and Kiwanis for supporting this programming for our school." De Vlantis emphasized the role of the school's three counselors in meeting one-on-one needs and leading small groups.
About the Bulldog Den she said: "Whether they need a moment to rest, recharge, reset, or work through a challenge, this space helps them feel cared for." She described counselor-led groups and weekly planning meetings among staff to coordinate supports.
Board members responded with praise for the programs and for staff work to create positive climate and safety. No formal action was associated with the presentation; it was offered as an informational item and staff thanked the board for its support.
