“We were shut down off of JAWA today, starting around 06:30 in the morning and we held up very well,” Public Works staff said, reporting the village withstood a 12-hour outage because a Palatine interconnect was back online and the village had an available well. Staff said a meeting of JAWA member managers is scheduled for the following Wednesday to finalize the repair plan and timing.
Staff warned the repair could be extensive: the water main is a 90-inch transmission main and the outage affects seven member communities, meaning repairs could take significant time depending on the extent of damage. Village Water Superintendent Ryan Christiansen said the village’s well is potable but would produce a noticeable water-quality change if brought online as a contingency. “It’s safe to drink, but there’s going to be a definite water quality difference that people are going to notice,” Christiansen said.
Staff said they had prepared communication materials and would coordinate messaging with JAWA and neighboring communities. Trustees asked whether the repair would reach news outlets; staff said the member communities would likely issue a collective statement if the repair is expected to have wide public impact.
The village also noted it had recently regained a well and that operational planning included scenarios for potable supply if the JAWA interconnect capacity proved insufficient. Staff said they will await the Wednesday meeting to firm up a public timeline and distribution-impact estimates before issuing broader public notices.
