Senate clears change to eligibility for Oregon Board of Marine Pilots membership

Senator Weber, who presented the bill, said the current statute requires licensees who serve on the board to be Oregon citizens, which limits the pool of qualified applicants. SB 459 would remove the citizenship requirement for licensee members so the state can recruit a larger and more experienced set of marine pilots; Weber said Washington and California do not impose the citizenship restriction.
Weber said the needs of marine pilots are the same regardless of citizenship and that expanding eligibility will help recruit members to serve on the board. The measure passed and was declared to have received a constitutional majority.
