Waynesboro outlines spring and summer downtown events with planned street closures and alcohol service
Summary
City staff briefed council on a slate of downtown events between April and June that will require street closures or involve alcohol service, including Wings Over Waynesboro (April 12), River Fest (May 3), Virginia Street Arts Festival (May 17–18), Tour of the Town (May 28), the Wayne Theatre Association gala (June 6) and Hikerfest (June 6–7).
City staff told the Waynesboro City Council March 24 about upcoming downtown events through the summer that will require street closures and/or alcohol service, and asked council to inform staff of any concerns.
Key events and notes provided by staff: Wings Over Waynesboro at Sunset Park (April 12) — no road closures but alcohol served; River Fest (May 3) — limited closure of West Main Street and a small portion of East Main Street, no alcohol; Virginia Street Arts Festival (May 17–18) — limited street closures around event sites, mural painting projects and a mix of DORA-format and defined alcohol service areas; a Tour of the Town (May 28) — DORA-format event, no street closure; Wayne Theatre Association gala (June 6) — evening Main Street closure from Wayne Avenue to Church Street with alcohol service; and Hikerfest (June 6–7) — a pre-fest DORA event and main festival on June 7 with traditional alcohol service in a defined area. Staff also noted the farmers market will run Saturdays from May through October in Constitution Park and the Wayne on Main concert series on several Wednesdays across the summer; these events may include limited street closures and alcohol service under established permitting.
Staff said management of street closures falls within the city manager’s authority but asked council for awareness given the number of events and the mix of DORA-format (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) and defined-event alcohol service. Council was asked to relay any concerns to staff as event planning continues.
